Joe Cocker is an English rock and blues singer, who came to popularity in the 1960s, and is known for his gritty voice, his spasmodic body movement in performance and his cover versions of popular songs. Cocker became a rock legend. He was born in Sheffield, England, on 20 May 1944 as John Robert Cocker. He has survived the sixties, a low period in the seventies, made a comeback in the eighties, and continues to be a solid and consistent performer in the nineties. His gutsy, gravelly, vocal style and unique stage presence make him one of the most dynamic singers in the music industry. In 1993 Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male, in 2007 was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown, and in 2008 he received an OBE (Order of the British Empire)  at Buckingham Palace for services to music. Cocker was ranked number 97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list. He died at the age of 70 from lung cancer in 2014. Check out: Chords for Beginners: Elvis Presley.
